Synthesia Alternatives in 2026: 7 Tools Compared by Job

Seven Synthesia alternatives sorted by the job you use Synthesia for, from AI avatar videos and training courses to software demos without a presenter. Prices checked October 2026.

By Bibin Mathew, founder of Nook · Published · 13 min read

Synthesia makes videos with AI avatar presenters from a script. You type what the presenter should say, pick an avatar and a language, and add slides or screen recordings around it. Training, HR and communications teams use it to make videos without filming anyone. People still look elsewhere: the minutes and credits run out, the plan they need for translation or more editors costs more than they expected, or the videos they make are software walkthroughs where a presenter on screen is not the point. This page sorts seven alternatives by the job you use Synthesia for.

Written by Bibin Mathew, who makes Nook. Prices checked on October 29, 2026 on each vendor's pricing page.

Short answer

The best Synthesia alternative depends on the job:

  • AI avatar videos with a very large avatar and language range, and longer videos on paid plans: HeyGen.
  • Training videos with avatars, quizzes and SCORM export for an LMS: Colossyan.
  • Avatar videos at a lower entry price: Elai.
  • Software training from a screen recording, with an avatar if you want one: Trupeer.
  • A narrated software demo and a written guide from a screen recording you already have, with no avatar: Nook.
  • Short how-to videos with AI narration, captured as you click: Guidde.
  • Editing real footage with AI voices and voice clones: Descript.

If you need a human-looking presenter speaking many languages, at enterprise scale with SSO and a large avatar library, Synthesia is still one of the strongest tools for that. The software-focused options here do a different job.

Why people look for a Synthesia alternative

What Synthesia costs in 2026

As of October 29, 2026, the Synthesia pricing page lists four plans. Usage is counted in credits, which the page converts at about 100 credits per minute of video, and every plan includes 10 free minutes a month.

PlanBilled monthlyBilled yearlyCredits a monthVideo on top of the free 10 minStock avatarsSeats
Basic$0$0500None, 10 min a month91 editor

Pro$89/month (first month $49)$59/month ($708/year)6,000Up to about 60 min a month180+1 editor, 5 guests
EnterpriseCustomCustomCustomUnlimited240+Custom

Personal avatars are 3 on Starter, 5 on Pro and unlimited on Enterprise. The comparison table lists 140+ languages and voices on all plans. One-click translation into 140+ languages and SAML SSO are listed on Enterprise.

Credits are shared and reset each month

Per the pricing page, video, dubbing and surveys all draw on one credit pool. Dubbing uses 80 credits a minute with lip-sync and 40 without. Credits are used when something is generated, not while you edit or preview. Your monthly allowance resets each billing period, and video creation pauses when you hit the limit until the plan renews or you buy more credits. If you make many videos one month and none the next, that is hard to plan around.

One editor on self-serve plans

Starter and Pro each include one editor plus guests. A second person who needs to build videos means talking to sales about Enterprise.

You need software demos, not a presenter

Synthesia has an AI Screen Recorder, a Chrome and Edge extension that records your screen, transcribes your narration into a script, removes filler words and splits the recording into scenes, and can place an avatar next to it. That works well for training. But if most of your videos are product walkthroughs, help center clips or app review screencasts, a presenter may add cost without adding much, and you may want a written step-by-step guide alongside the video.

You want a written guide too

Synthesia makes video. If your viewers also need a step-by-step guide with screenshots, for a help center, Notion or Confluence, you will need another tool.

HeyGen

What it is. HeyGen generates videos with AI avatars from a script, with stock avatars, photo avatars and custom video avatars of yourself. It is Synthesia's most direct competitor.

Best for. Marketing, sales and content teams who make lots of avatar videos, including personalized and translated ones, and want longer videos on self-serve plans.

Price (as of October 29, 2026). From the HeyGen pricing page: Free has 3 videos a month with a watermark and videos up to 1 minute. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly per the FAQ, with 600 credits and videos up to 30 minutes. Pro is $49 a month with 1,000 credits. Business is $149 a month with 1,500 credits, videos up to 60 minutes, SSO and extra seats at $20 per seat per month. Enterprise is custom. The yearly toggle says "2 months free" but showed a yearly figure only for Creator.

Strengths.

  • 700+ stock avatars on paid plans and 175 languages and dialects listed.
  • Videos up to 30 minutes from the first paid plan.
  • SSO on Business, without going to an enterprise contract.

Where it falls short vs Synthesia. Usage is still credit-based. Synthesia leans harder into enterprise training workflows, and HeyGen's pricing page does not mention screen recording.

Colossyan

What it is. Colossyan makes AI avatar training videos, with interactive videos, and exports to SCORM so videos can go into a learning management system.

Best for. Learning and development teams who build courses and need them to work inside an LMS.

Price (as of October 29, 2026). From the Colossyan pricing page: Starter is free, with 20 minutes a month of standard video and 1 editor. Professional is $59 a month billed yearly, with 30 minutes a month of standard video, up to 3 editors at $30 a month for each extra member, 5 SCORM exports a month and watermark removal. Enterprise is custom, with unlimited minutes, SSO and 4K. The page lists 300+ stock avatars and 120+ languages. It did not show a monthly-billed price for Professional.

Strengths.

  • SCORM export and interactive videos, built for training.
  • A free plan with more minutes than Synthesia's.
  • More than one editor on the self-serve paid plan.

Where it falls short vs Synthesia. Minutes on Professional are modest, and the newer avatar model has a much smaller allowance. Analytics and SSO are on Enterprise.

Elai

What it is. Elai makes AI avatar videos from a script. Its pricing page also lists a built-in screen recorder, automatic translation and voice cloning.

Best for. Small teams who want avatar videos and a lower monthly price than Synthesia Pro.

Price (as of October 29, 2026). From the Elai pricing page: Free has 1 minute of video. Creator is $29 a month, or $23 a month billed yearly, with 15 minutes a month. Team is $125 a month, or $100 a month billed yearly, with 50 minutes a month, 3 editors and 3 guests. Enterprise is custom. Extra minutes on paid plans are $2 each. The page lists 80+ avatars and 75+ languages on the free plan.

Strengths.

  • A clear per-minute price.
  • Three editors on Team.
  • Voice cloning included on Team with yearly billing.

Where it falls short vs Synthesia. A smaller avatar library. The pricing page did not make clear which plans include the screen recorder, translation or SCORM, so check before you buy.

Trupeer

What it is. Trupeer turns a screen recording, from its browser extension or an uploaded video, into an AI-narrated training video and a written document. It also offers AI avatars.

Best for. Teams who use Synthesia mostly for software training and want the screen recording, narration, avatar and written doc in one place.

Price (as of October 29, 2026). From the Trupeer pricing page: Free has 1,000 AI credits a month, 5-minute recordings and a watermark. Pro is $49 a month, or $40 billed yearly, for 1 creator with 2,000 credits and 10-minute recordings. Scale is $249 a month, or $199 billed yearly, for 3 creators, 10,000 credits, 15-minute recordings and 2 translation languages. Enterprise is custom, with recordings up to 3 hours and custom avatars. Per the FAQ, AI video uses 100 credits a minute and an avatar another 50.

Strengths.

  • Starts from the software, not a script.
  • A written document from the same recording.
  • Avatars when you want a presenter.

Where it falls short vs Synthesia. A smaller avatar range, and usage is still in credits. See Trupeer alternatives and Trupeer vs Nook.

Nook

What it is. Nook turns a screen recording you already have into a narrated demo video and a step-by-step written guide. You upload an MP4, MOV or WebM up to 15 minutes from any recorder. There is no avatar. Nook finds the steps on screen, writes a script line for each one, and voices it with an AI voice (Deepgram Aura-2 in English, native voices in 14 other languages), your own voice with ums and silences cut, or captions only. On Pro and Business it can use your own cloned voice. It adds zooms on clicks, captions, intro and outro cards with your logo and background music, and blurs emails, card numbers and API keys on screen.

Best for. Founders, product teams and agencies whose videos are software walkthroughs: product demos, help videos, client handovers and app review screencasts for Shopify, Meta, Google OAuth and HubSpot. See software tutorial videos and app review videos.

Price (as of October 29, 2026). From the Nook pricing page: your first video is free, up to 1 minute, watermarked and view only. Starter is $9 a month for 5 videos. Pro is $19 a month for 20 videos, with every language, your own cloned voice, branded guides and handover kits. Business is $49 a month for 60 videos, with white-label pages and priority rendering. Yearly billing gives 2 months free, and extra videos are 5 for $9. No plan has seats, and a video costs the same whether it runs 1 minute or 15.

Strengths.

  • A written guide with a screenshot per step, exported to PDF, Word or Markdown.
  • Language versions: each translation is its own MP4 and guide. See translated demo videos.
  • Works from recordings you already made, including silent ones.
  • A share link with chapters, an embed code, and kits that put several videos on one page.

Where it falls short vs Synthesia. Nook has no AI avatars, so if a presenter on screen is the point, it is the wrong tool. It does not make videos from a script or slides, does not record your screen, and has no team workspace, SSO, SCORM export or LMS features. It covers 15 languages, where Synthesia lists 140+. More on the narration side in how to add an AI voiceover to a screen recording.

Guidde

What it is. Guidde records a workflow through its browser extension, desktop app or mobile app and generates a how-to video with an AI voiceover, plus a written version.

Best for. Support and customer success teams who need many short how-to videos for software, with narration but no presenter.

Price (as of October 29, 2026). From the Guidde pricing page: Free is $0 for any web app. Pro is $29 per creator per month, or $19 billed yearly. Business is $59 per creator per month, or $39 billed yearly, with desktop and mobile capture and interactive demos. Enterprise is custom. Virtual avatars and voice cloning are listed as add-ons.

Strengths.

  • Fast capture-to-video for short workflows.
  • A written version alongside the video.
  • Viewers are free.

Where it falls short vs Synthesia. Avatars are an add-on, not the core. Translation is on Enterprise. Pricing is per creator. See Guidde alternatives.

Descript

What it is. Descript is a video and audio editor where you edit by editing the transcript. It records your screen, removes filler words, and has AI voices, voice clones, dubbing and an avatar gallery.

Best for. People who would rather film themselves or record real narration and then clean it up, instead of generating a presenter.

Price (as of October 29, 2026). From the Descript pricing page: Free has 1 hour of media a month and 720p export. Hobbyist is $24 per person per month, or $16 billed yearly, with 10 hours of media. Creator is $35, or $24 billed yearly, with 30 hours and 4K. Business is $65, or $50 billed yearly, with 40 hours. Enterprise is custom.

Strengths.

  • Real editing, by transcript.
  • Voice clones and AI voices to fix or replace lines.
  • Many media hours for the price.

Where it falls short vs Synthesia. It is an editor, so you still do the editing. Its avatars are not its focus the way they are in Synthesia.

How to choose

Start from the job

  1. You need a presenter on screen. HeyGen, Colossyan or Elai. Compare avatar quality in your language, not just counts.
  2. Your videos go into an LMS. Colossyan, for SCORM and interactivity.
  3. Your videos are software walkthroughs and a presenter is optional. Trupeer if you want an avatar available, Nook if you want a narrated demo and a written guide from recordings you already have, Guidde if you want to capture fresh in an extension.
  4. You want to keep a real person on camera. Descript, or a recorder like Loom. See Loom alternatives.

Compare pricing models

  • Credits or minutes (Synthesia, HeyGen, Colossyan, Elai, Trupeer) scale with video length. A 10-minute training video uses ten times the allowance of a 1-minute one.
  • Per creator or person (Guidde, Descript) grows with the team.
  • Videos per month (Nook) costs the same whether a video is 1 minute or 15. Twenty 5-minute software demos a month is about 100 minutes of video, which is more than Synthesia Pro's monthly allowance; on Nook Pro it is $19. If you need an avatar in those videos, that comparison does not apply. We explain the model in pricing by videos, not seats.

FAQ

What is the best Synthesia alternative?

It depends on the job. For avatar videos, HeyGen is the closest match, Colossyan is best for LMS training, and Elai is a lower-cost option. For software training with an optional avatar, use Trupeer. For narrated software demos and written guides without an avatar, use Nook.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Synthesia?

For avatar videos, Synthesia Starter at $14 a month billed yearly is already among the lower entry prices. Colossyan's free plan has 20 minutes a month. For software demos without a presenter, Nook Starter is $9 a month for 5 videos and Pro is $19 a month for 20, with no per-minute metering.

HeyGen vs Synthesia: which is better?

Both make AI avatar videos from a script. As of October 29, 2026, HeyGen Creator is $29 a month with videos up to 30 minutes, and Synthesia Starter is $19 a month with about 12 minutes on top of the free 10. HeyGen lists more stock avatars and languages. Synthesia is strong on enterprise training and has its own screen recorder. Try both with the same script.

Is there a Synthesia alternative without avatars?

Yes. Nook turns a screen recording into a narrated demo video with an AI voice or your own, plus a written guide, with no avatar. Guidde and Descript also make narrated videos without requiring a presenter.

Can I make a training video from a screen recording?

Yes. Synthesia's AI Screen Recorder records your screen and builds a script from your narration. Trupeer and Guidde have their own recorders. Nook works from a recording you already have, in MP4, MOV or WebM up to 15 minutes, and also writes a step-by-step guide.
