Scribe watches you click through a process and writes a step-by-step guide with screenshots as you go. It is fast, it has a free plan, and for many teams it is the default way to write an SOP. People still look elsewhere: for cheaper seats, local storage, a narrated video next to the steps, or a walkthrough customers can click through.
This page sorts seven alternatives by the job you use Scribe for. We make one of them, Nook, which starts from a screen recording you already have rather than capturing clicks live. We say plainly where that fits and where it does not.
Written by Bibin Mathew, who makes Nook. Prices checked on October 28, 2026 on each vendor's own pricing page.
Short answer
The best Scribe alternative depends on what you use Scribe for:
- Quick written SOPs captured as you click, shared with a team: Tango.
- Written SOPs that stay on your own computer, paid once: Folge.
- A written guide and a video from the same capture, on a small budget: Dubble.
- Short how-to videos with AI narration plus a written version: Guidde.
- Interactive click-through walkthroughs for customers and prospects: Supademo.
- Quick, personal video explanations: Loom.
- A narrated video and a written guide from a recording you already made: Nook.
If all you want is a written SOP captured while you click, Scribe itself is still one of the most direct tools for that, and its free plan is a fair place to start. Tango is the closest like-for-like switch.
What Scribe costs in 2026
As of October 28, 2026, the Scribe pricing page lists four plans. The page has a monthly and yearly toggle that says yearly saves 20%.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | Seats | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $0 | $0 | Not stated | Capture in any web app, share by link and embed |
| Pro Personal | $35/seat/month | $25/seat/month | From 1 | Desktop and mobile apps, branding, redaction, PDF, HTML and Markdown export |
| Pro Team | $17/seat/month | $13/seat/month | From 5 | Pro Personal plus comments |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | PII and PHI auto-redaction, SSO, roles, translations |
The free plan is genuinely useful for web apps, and Pro plans include Scribe's Autocapture feature. Scribe has a browser extension for Chrome and Edge and a desktop app for Windows and Mac. Teams must all be on the same tier.
Why people look for a Scribe alternative
- Per-seat pricing grows with the team. Every paid plan is per seat, and Pro Team starts at five seats, which is more than you need if one or two people write the docs.
- Desktop capture and exports are paid. The free plan covers web apps. Desktop apps and PDF, HTML and Markdown export start on Pro Personal.
- You want a video too. Scribe is guide-first. Onboarding, training and customer help often land better as a short narrated video with the written steps alongside.
- You already recorded the process. Scribe captures as you click, so an existing Zoom, QuickTime or Loom recording does not help. You would click through it all again.
- You want customers to click through it. An interactive walkthrough is a different tool category from a written guide.

Tango
What it is. Tango is the closest match to Scribe. You do a task, and Tango turns it into a step-by-step guide with screenshots, highlights and descriptions. It also offers in-app guidance on top of real web apps.
Good for. Teams that want a shared library of written workflows. In Tango vs Scribe, the core job is nearly the same, so price at your team size and which plan has the exports you need usually decide it.
Price (as of October 28, 2026). From the Tango pricing page: Free is $0 with 5 shared workflows, browser capture and up to 10 users per workspace. Pro is $30 per user per month, or $22 billed yearly, for 1 to 2 users. At 3 or more users the rate is $20 per user per month, or $15 billed yearly. Pro adds unlimited workflows, desktop capture, PDF, Markdown and HTML export and video embeds. Enterprise is custom.
Watch out for. The free plan's 5-workflow library is tight for real use, and exports start on Pro. Guided features like Guide Me and Pins sit on Enterprise.
Folge
What it is. Folge is a desktop app for Windows and macOS that takes a screenshot on every click and turns the clicks into a step-by-step guide, SOP or tutorial. Per its site, captures, edits and exports happen locally, and nothing is uploaded to Folge's servers.
Good for. People who need written SOPs but do not want their screenshots in someone else's cloud, and anyone who would rather pay once than pay per month.
Price (as of October 28, 2026). From the Folge pricing page: Free is $0 for 5 guides with PDF export and all annotation tools. Personal is a one-time $89 for unlimited guides on one platform, with more export formats including Notion and WordPress. Business is a one-time $155 per seat for commercial use on both Mac and Windows, with native Confluence export. Prices exclude VAT.
Watch out for. Guides live on your machine rather than in a shared online library, there is no video output, and collaboration is lighter than in cloud tools.
Dubble
What it is. Dubble is a Chrome extension that records how you work and turns your actions into written step-by-step guides, videos and screenshots.
Good for. Small teams who want a written guide and a recording of the same process, with three creators in one Pro price.
Price (as of October 28, 2026). From the Dubble pricing page: Free has unlimited guides, image editing and redaction, and PDF download, but no screen or audio recording. Pro is $18 a month billed yearly with 3 creators included and $6 a month for each additional creator, and adds video and audio recording. We did not see a monthly-billed price.
Watch out for. Video is Pro only. Several Enterprise features, including SSO, API access and integrations, were marked "coming soon" when we checked. Its site only mentions a Chrome extension.
Guidde
What it is. Guidde records a workflow through its browser extension, desktop app or mobile app and generates a how-to video with an AI voiceover, plus a step-by-step written version.
Good for. Teams who make lots of short how-to videos for customer help articles or internal training, and who want narration without recording their own voice.
Price (as of October 28, 2026). From the Guidde pricing page: Free is $0 for any web app with voiceover recording and shareable links. Pro is $29 per creator per month, or $19 billed yearly, and adds watermark removal, branding and export. Business is $59 per creator per month, or $39 billed yearly, and adds desktop apps and interactive demos. Guidde's site mentions AI voices and translation into more than 50 languages.
Watch out for. Guidde is recorder-first, and its site does not mention uploading a video you already have. Desktop app capture is listed on Business. Its pricing page described the free plan limit in two different ways when we checked, so confirm the limit before you rely on it.
Supademo
What it is. Supademo builds interactive demos: click-through walkthroughs of your product that a viewer steps through at their own pace. Demos can be shared as a link, embed, video or PDF.
Good for. Sales, marketing and customer success teams who want prospects or new users to click through a product tour, rather than read about it.
Price (as of October 28, 2026). From the Supademo pricing page: Free is $0 with 1 creator, 5 interactive demos and unlimited views. Scale is $50 per creator per month, or $38 billed yearly, and adds branching and analytics. Business is $249 a month, or $199 billed yearly, and Growth is $450 a month, or $350 billed yearly, with 5 creators bundled.
Watch out for. It is not built for internal SOPs. Its pricing page does not describe a written-document feature, and its paid plans cost more than the SOP tools here.
Loom
What it is. Loom records your screen and camera and gives you a link to share. It is the default async video tool in many teams.
Good for. Quick, personal explanations where your face and voice matter more than polish.
Price (as of October 28, 2026). From the Loom pricing page: Starter is free with 25 videos per person and screen recordings up to 5 minutes. Business is $18 per user per month, and Business + AI is $24 per user per month with AI summaries, chapters and titles. The page says annual billing saves up to 17% but did not show the annual price.
Watch out for. Loom does not produce a step-by-step guide with screenshots. Its pricing page lists video-to-text automation and summaries, not SOPs. If you already have Loom recordings of your processes, you can download them and run them through Nook to get a narrated video and a written guide.
Nook
What it is. Nook turns a screen recording you already have into a narrated demo video and a step-by-step guide. You upload an MP4, MOV or WebM up to 15 minutes, from any recorder, including a phone. No browser extension is needed. Nook finds the steps, writes and voices the narration (AI voice in 15 languages, your own voice, or captions only), and adds captions and zooms. It also writes a step-by-step guide with annotated screenshots that you can export as PDF, Word or Markdown, plus a share page you can send as a link.
Good for. Teams who want a video and a written guide from one process, especially when the recording already exists. It suits SOP videos for onboarding and training (see SOP videos) and customer help articles where some people want to watch and others want to read. More on the workflow in how to turn a screen recording into a step-by-step guide.
Price (as of October 28, 2026). From the Nook pricing page: your first video is free, up to 1 minute with a watermark. After that, one video is $9. Pro is $19 a month for 10 videos, and Studio is $49 a month for 30. No plan has per-seat pricing, and prices are lower in many countries.
Where Nook does not fit. Nook does not capture clicks live and does not record your screen. If you want a written SOP that builds itself while you click, Scribe or Tango is the more direct fit, and Folge if you want it to stay on your machine. Nook does not make interactive click-through demos like Supademo. Recordings top out at 15 minutes.
How to choose
Start from the job
- Internal SOPs and quick how-tos for your team. Stay on Scribe, or try Tango. Compare them at your actual team size.
- SOPs that must stay off the cloud. Folge stores guides locally and is paid once.
- Customer help articles. If your readers are fine with text and screenshots, Scribe, Tango or Dubble works. If you want a short video on the article too, look at Guidde, Dubble Pro or Nook.
- Video plus guide. Guidde and Dubble capture fresh in their own extension. Nook works from a recording you already have.
- Interactive walkthroughs for prospects and new users. Supademo.
- A quick personal explanation. Loom.
Compare the pricing model, not just the price
Scribe, Tango, Guidde, Supademo and Loom charge per seat, user or creator, which is predictable for one or two people and multiplies as everyone documents their own work. Folge is a one-time license, cheapest over years if one person owns documentation. Dubble Pro bundles 3 creators. Nook charges per finished video, which fits a few people making videos now and then.
FAQ
What is the best Scribe alternative?
It depends on the job. Tango is the closest match for click-captured SOPs, Folge for local one-time-purchase SOPs, Dubble or Guidde for a guide plus video, Supademo for interactive tours, and Nook for a narrated video and guide from a recording you already have.
Tango vs Scribe: which is better?
They do the same core job: capture clicks and turn them into a written guide with screenshots. Both have free plans. As of October 28, 2026, Scribe Pro Team is $13 per seat per month billed yearly with a 5-seat minimum, and Tango is $15 per user per month billed yearly at 3 or more users. Try both on the same process.
Are there free Scribe alternatives?
Yes. Tango has a free plan with 5 shared workflows. Folge's free version covers 5 guides with PDF export. Dubble's free plan has unlimited guides without video recording. Guidde, Supademo and Loom also have free plans. Nook's first video is free, up to 1 minute with a watermark. Scribe's own Basic plan is free for web apps.
Which Scribe alternative also makes a video?
Guidde makes AI-narrated how-to videos with a written version. Dubble Pro records video and audio alongside the guide. Nook turns an existing screen recording into a narrated video plus a step-by-step guide. Loom makes videos but not written guides.
Can I make a step-by-step guide from a video I already recorded?
Scribe, Tango and Folge capture clicks live, so they need you to do the process again. Nook works from a recording you already have, in MP4, MOV or WebM up to 15 minutes, and writes the guide with annotated screenshots for you.
Are these prices current?
We checked each one on the vendor's official pricing page on October 28, 2026 and linked the source. Vendors change plans often, so confirm before you buy.
